City Directory Provides More than a Residence

I was finally able to locate a death date for Francois Xavier Turgeon by following him in a sequence of city directories for New Bedford, Massachusetts. Listed below in the 1924 New Bedford City Directory is the entry for F. Xavier Turgeon stating that he had died the previous year on January 15.

Also listed are several of his adult children with spouses and occupations.

This is an amazing find, Teresa. I've looked at lots of city directories and never once seen a death date. Lucky you!

Awesome! Like, Nancy above, I have never discovered a death date in a city directory. However, for one of my 2nd-great-grandfathers, a city directory DID provide me with a middle initial, while neither census records or his marriage application did that. He had a fairly common name, so with the middle initial added, I was able to search the PA death indices for the 5-year span in which I knew he died, and, voila, I found him. It was that middle initial which did it for me---all courtesy of the city directory. I love those!

I was very happy to find this. This is the second time I've found a date of death in a city directory.

This IS a great find! I have found City Directories useful when they mention a woman is a widow, as that helps to narrow the death date of the husband, but having the actual date is much more useful!
